Kim swims freestyle events ranging from 200 to 1500-meters and also swims the 200-meter butterfly. At her first major meet, the U.S. Junior Championships held in Buffalo in March, she place 4th in the 1650 free and 7th in the 1000 free. She excelled against tough competition at this summer's Cadillac Swim Series, finishing 4th in the 1500 freestyle and 9th in the 800 freestyle in June in Charlotte, NC, and finishing 1st in the 800 freestyle and 8th in the 400 freestyle at Long Island in July. Kim is one of the youngest swimmers to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Trials, having shattered the 800-meter qualifying cut at a time trial in July of this summer. Only 14, her determination and fearlessness belie her age. Just six months ago, she contacted U.S. Swimming officials about the possibility of serving as a volunteer at Olympic Trials. Failing to get a firm response, she became determined to attend the Trials on her own terms.
Kim will be a sophomore at the Ursline School in New Rochelle this fall. |
