Teuscher Voted Team Captain, Captures Bronze

Cristina Teuscher won her first individual Olympic medal, capturing 3rd in the 200 I.M. She passed three competitors in the final 50 meters, en route to a lifetime best of 2:13.32. In addition to her medal winning performance, Teuscher was selected by her peers to be the U.S. Women's Swimming team captain.

Unfortunately, a perfect ending was not to be had. In a decision that left even neutral observers stunned, U.S. coach Richard Quick suddenly removed Cristina from the 800 freestyle relay just hours before the event was scheduled to start. There has been widespread speculation about Quick's motivations. More charitable observers have suggested that perhaps he forgot relays use only four swimmers and not five, while others have wondered if he was attemping to strengthen his incoming freshman class for next year.
