RICK CAREY

Gold Medal - 100-meter Backstroke
Gold Medal - 200-meter Backstroke
Gold Medal - 400 Medley Relay
In 1984 Rick Carey became Badger's first Olympic medalist, winning three golds medals in Los Angeles. Carey, a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team that did not compete due to the boycott, entered the meet as a heavy favorite to win both backstroke events, having set new world records in both the 100 and 200-meter backstrokes in 1983. Carey did not disappoint, swimming to victory in both events and giving the U.S. Team a sizable lead on its way to victory in the 400 Medley Relay.
